To make translational research more impactful, there is a need for a more sizeable and diverse workforce. There are a myriad of potential careers (beyond researchers/principal investigators) that make up the research enterprise, all of which play a crucial role in the scientific symphony. The hope is that this curriculum will engage prospective research professionals and inspire them to pursue meaningful paths within the translational research enterprise.

While clinical and translational research studies can be quite complex, at a basic level most follow a standard study life cycle. The lifecycle begins with an idea, observation, or question, which leads to a hypothesis (or a statement about what researchers believe the results of the study will show). To test the hypothesis, researchers design and implement an appropriate study. Study data are then collected and once the study is completed, the data are analyzed using statistical methods appropriate for evaluating the hypothesis of interest. Finally, the researchers draw conclusions from the statistical analysis and report the findings of the study. Every phase of this process must have three important characteristics: integrity, transparency, and reproducibility.

It is important to adhere to ethical principles in order to protect research participants, create a value-based environment to hold researchers accountable, and build public trust and support for research. Institutions need research integrity professionals to help ensure clinical research adheres to these principles.

In the U.S. the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is the agency within the Department of Health and Human Services that is tasked with protecting public health by ensuring the safety and effectiveness of commercialized products, including pharmaceuticals, medical devices, veterinary medicines, and cosmetics. Regulatory professionals at clinical and translational research institutions and beyond help ensure the safety of FDA regulated products that are tested within their organization.

Equity in clinical and translational research is an important piece of the puzzle to ensure everyone, including traditionally underserved and underrepresented groups, can benefit from research. Intentional and inclusive engagement and recruitment of a diverse population of research participants and research staff is so important to a key mission of clinical research and trials: to improve the health of everyone in the population.

Studies suggest that community and stakeholder engagement in research is the key to tailoring best practices for specific populations. With the uptake of translational sciences, researchers are shifting focus from pure scientific discovery to application in real world practice settings. There is a critical difference between simply obtaining feedback from the community and giving them real power necessary to affect the research process. The latter results in outcomes that can benefit individuals, families, communities, and populations as a whole. Institutions are increasingly recruiting individuals to help with engaging communities in research.
